Excerpt from the Upledger Institute.
Craniosacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle, hands-on method of evaluating and enhancing the functioning of a physiological body system called the craniosacral system – comprised of the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord.
Using a soft touch, practitioners release restrictions in the craniosacral system to improve the functioning of the central nervous system.
By complementing the body’s natural healing processes, CST is increasingly used as a preventive health measure for its ability to bolster resistance to disease, and is effective for a wide range of medical problems associated with pain and dysfunction, including:
- Migraine Headaches
- Chronic Neck and Back Pain
- Motor-Coordination Impairments
- Colic
- Autism
- Central Nervous System Disorders
- Orthopedic Problems
- Concussions and Traumatic Brain Injuries
- Spinal Cord Injuries
- Scoliosis
- Infantile Disorders
- Learning Disabilities
- Chronic Fatigue
- Emotional Difficulties
- Stress and Tension-Related Problems
- Fibromyalgia and other Connective-Tissue Disorders
- Temporomandibular Joint Syndrome (TMJ)
- Neurovascular or Immune Disorders
- Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
- Post-Surgical Dysfunction

What is Craniosacral Therapy? From the Milne Institue.
You might think of it as a gentle massage technique, or a cross between chiropractic or osteopathic maneuvers and hands-on energy healing. Quiet and relaxing, inducing restful sleep, it’s been labeled mysterious. In reality, craniosacral therapy addresses a rhythmic system at the core of our physiology – the pulse of energy that flows between our head and pelvic area. It’s as essential, measurable, and tangible as our breath and heart rate. The craniosacral system follows a rhythm, and the skull bones accommodate its pulse. Just as a cardiologist seeks to improve the cardiovascular system, a craniosacral practitioner evaluates and optimizes the pulse of the craniosacral rhythm. This is a gentle, often deeply intuitive technique.
It’s a form of bodywork consisting of exceedingly light finger and hand pressure upon the cranial bones and the sacrum, and upon the involuntary movements of these bones.”

What to Expect in your Session.
The title above is deceiving because I always encourage people receiving CST to let go of expectations and allow an organic emergence of whatever experience arises, be that anything from falling asleep to astral journeying! Having said that, it still can be nice to know ahead of time how the session will unfold and what you may (or may not!) experience.
- The first minutes of your session will be an intake portion where you let me know why you are seeking CST. This gives me insight on what specific CST “holds” I will do within the session as well as what intention you and I might bring to the session
- You will be fully clothed, shoes off. Please remove any jewelry, watches, belts, restricting items.
- Lightweight, non-bulky, comfortable clothing is optimal.
- You will lie on the table, on top of the blanket. We may start with you either face down or up, depending on the intake.
- There may be a few minutes of soft tissue work around the head, neck, spine and hips to help free up the superficial muscles of the craniosacral system.
- CST work is very subtle and gentle and so it may feel like there is no movement, nothing happening. You are encouraged to stay present with the breath, the body and to feel into the subtle energy at work beneath my hands and within your entire system and body.
- I will place my hands in various positions along the feet, entire spinal column (tailbone to skull), head, face and (if determined during intake) within the mouth (with gloved hands). I may do some or all of this, based on the intake.
- Each hold may last anywhere from 1-5 minutes.
- CST work is a very meditative practice for both the practitioner and recipient. You can expect me to be mostly silent throughout the session, however I may prompt you in breathwork, mindfulness or visualization from time to time.
- As mentioned, you may experience anything…..from falling asleep, to astral journeying. From deep relaxation to the arousal of any emotion spontaneously. From a seemingly empty mind to deep insight. My recommendation is to open to and allow whatever arises to arise, to move, to unfold without inhibition. Crying is welcome, as is laughter, sighing, moaning, whatever moves through you. Even if that seems to be nothing, feel that fully too.
- Be open, be curious, release judgement (of self or the practice), and trust in the innate healing power of your own nervous system, body, mind and heart.
- And lastly, enjoy.
With Deep Gratitude,
Lauri Glenn
