Is your yoga teacher a “Rock Star”? (scroll to bottom for article link)
In my 18 years of practicing yoga, I have had the opportunity and privilege to learn from some of the most well-renowned yoga teachers. I have also had the chance to take classes with some virtually unknown teachers and some who are “Rock Stars” in their own communities. These experiences have varied from vastly inspirational to physically uplifting to mediocre and on occasion, disappointing.
What is it that makes a great yoga teacher? One who can take you beyond just moving through Asanas? Beyond watching your classmates in the sweat-dripping, power flow class that is so “hot” right now? Beyond the crazy, contortion of full Scorpion or initial confusion getting into Bird of Paradise? Beyond the not-always-but-oftentimes, strained “Om-ing” before or after class? Beyond the un-spoken Yoga Pant Competition? One who can take you into that place inside yourself where peace and calm lives? Where focus and balance grow from the inside out and there’s nothing to express outwardly but Love and understanding?
